HEAT TREATMENT FOR FORGED PRODUCT

Through our JV Partners, NAF has over 227 years of heat treatment experience and expertise.

EQUIPMENT AND CAPABILITIES

At NAF there are three furnaces – two are box type and one is a moving hood type furnace that is capable of annealing, normalizing, tempering, stress relieving and slow cooling the largest forgings that NAF can produce. To learn more, visit the Products section on our website. Heat treatment capability highlights include:

  • Vertical heat treating capability for shafts and hollow or sleeve forgings:
    • Over 10.5 meters (35 ft.) in length
    • Weights up to 40 metric tons (88,000 lbs.)
  • Heat stability testing capability for large vertically heat treated steam turbine rotors
  • A variety of horizontal heat treat furnaces and quench tanks for:
    • Solid and bored shafts to 23 meters (75 ft.) in length
    • Rings, sleeves and discs to outside diameters and lengths to 4.5 meters (177 in.)

NAF's JV Partners are both very strong financially and without debt. Should you require capabilities outside of those listed above, further investments of any kind can and will be considered. Don't hesitate to reach out to our team with questions.

THE PROCESS

Heat treatment involves controlled heating and cooling of metal to achieve desired physical and mechanical properties, without changing the shape of the product. NAF’s heat treatment techniques include annealing, normalizing and tempering, solution treatment, quenching (polymer, oil and water) and stress relieving. Heat treatment ensures product performance by achieving the balance of properties of strength, hardness, toughness, ductility, impact strength and microstructure required by customer specification.
